For over a half century, scientists involved in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) have sought radio signals from civilizations in other star systems. But rather than just listening like SETI, it’s now time for humanity to transmit powerful, intentional signals to other worlds, launching an ambitious project in Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI). We’ll discuss why we should transmit, and how to tackle the linguistic challenges of communicating with an independently evolved species at interstellar distances.
